If this is your first time at AUM, we’re glad you’re here. Whether you’ve been practicing yoga for years or have never stepped onto a mat before, you belong here. You don’t need to be flexible, strong, experienced, or confident to practice yoga at AUM. You don’t have to know what you’re doing or get it right. You are welcome just as you are. This post exists to help you feel prepared, supported, and comfortable before you arrive.

Choosing a Class as a New Student

All of our classes welcome beginners, including power and heated classes. We suggest you buy a New Student Class Pass to enjoy two weeks of unlimited yoga classes and to figure out which teachers and times fit your schedule and needs best. If you’re new, we recommend informing the teacher before class. Teachers are happy to provide guidance, options, and reassurance. You are always free to rest, modify poses, or skip anything that doesn’t feel right for you. There’s no expectation to keep up or push through discomfort. Everyone moves at their own pace here, and each practice is different.

Arriving for Your First Class

For your very first class, we suggest arriving about 15 minutes early so the teacher can show you around and help you settle in. Please avoid arriving more than 20 minutes early, as teachers use that time to prepare the studio and themselves so they can be fully present once class begins. If you arrive feeling nervous or unsure, that’s completely normal. We’re happy to help.

Signing Up and Walk-Ins

If signing up online feels confusing, don’t worry. Walk-ins and drop-ins are always welcome. You’re free to just come in, and we’ll help you check in at the studio. You can also buy class passes and memberships at the studio. If you have trouble signing up for classes, using your passes, or with any other issues regarding your online account, you can always email info@HouseofAUM.com for help.

What to Bring and What We Provide

Water

We have a spring water refill station with water available hot, cold, or at room temperature. Please bring a refillable water bottle; if you forget, we also have disposable cups. We encourage students to stay hydrated, especially before and during heated classes.

Mats

We provide eight Manduka studio mats for new students to borrow.

Towels

If you’re taking a warm or heated class or tend to sweat, we recommend bringing a towel or two. Sometimes it’s helpful to have a mat towel and a hand towel.

Props

All props are provided, including Manduka blocks, straps, and bolsters. Blocks come in various sizes. Feel free to use props during your practice. You don’t need to own anything special to participate.

Getting Ready at the Studio

We have a dressing room available if you want to change clothes before or after class. We also provide a self-care cabinet for students in case you forget something. It includes hair ties, feminine supplies, deodorant wipes, and other essentials. Our goal is for you to feel comfortable and well taken care of.

During Class

This is your practice; we are here to support and guide you. You are never required to do every pose. Rest is always an option. Child’s pose, seated rest, or stillness are welcome at any time. If something doesn’t feel right in your body, you are encouraged to prioritize comfort.

Heated and Warm Classes

Classes described as warm, hot, or heated are typically heated to around 90 degrees Fahrenheit. If you prefer a cooler experience, you’re welcome to arrive early and ask the teacher where cooler spots in the room tend to be or to set up near one of the fans. You’re always welcome to step out of the room at any time for fresh air, water, or a break if the heat feels overwhelming. Listening to your body is encouraged.

Hands-On Adjustments

Hands-on assistance is usually not provided. If a teacher offers hands-on help, clear permission will always be given first.

Leaving the Room or Leaving Early

The studio door is locked once class begins, but you are welcome to unlock the deadbolt and leave at any time. The teacher will lock the studio behind you if you're not returning. The sliding door at the front of the studio floor that opens into the lobby is the quietest and preferred exit during class. You are encouraged to step out at any time to use the restroom, get some fresh air, or for any reason.

Phones and Personal Items

We request that phones and personal items be left in the lobby along with your shoes. We do offer flexibility for parents or in emergency situations where someone feels they need their phone accessible to focus on their practice. If phones are kept in the lobby, we ask that they be silenced or turned off, including alarms. Ringing should be reserved for real emergencies. We want everyone to feel safe and supported during their practice.

Barefoot Practice and Cleanliness

Shoes are not worn in the yoga studio out of respect and tradition. You may take your shoes off in the lobby when you arrive. If you prefer, you are welcome to wear socks in the studio, although practicing barefoot on your mat often provides the best grip and stability. Socks can be especially comforting at the beginning and end of class. The studio floor is mopped once or twice a week with Force of Nature. According to the Force of Nature website, it is an “EPA registered sanitizer and disinfectant that kills 99.9% of viruses, bacteria, mold, and mildew.”

Community and Atmosphere

The atmosphere at AUM is peaceful, friendly, and welcoming. There is often gentle conversation before and after class, and many students form friendships here. It’s common for students to connect, with some going into the village together for coffee, tea, or lunch. You are free to socialize or enjoy quiet presence; both are appreciated. Occasionally, tea is served before class.

Questions After Class

Teachers are usually available briefly after class if you have questions. You’re always welcome to ask. You can also quietly leave if that’s what you need.

Our Philosophy at AUM

Yoga at AUM isn’t about achieving or being perfect. It focuses on awareness, sensation, and listening to yourself. How your practice feels is more important than how it looks. Your body is your guide, and you’re encouraged to trust it.

A Final Note for New Students

If you feel nervous before your first class, you’re not alone. Many people do. You don’t need to have everything figured out before you arrive. We’re excited to welcome you to our studio and meet you wherever you are. When you're ready, check out our class schedule and book your first class with us. Please use our NEW Student Class Pass for 2 weeks of unlimited yoga classes for just $35.
